The method involves burning a fuel mixture in a cylinder, which is connected with a fuel inlet. An air or oxygen supply unit is connected with an injection nozzle (5). The air or oxygen under pressure, which lies under atmospheric pressure, is mixed with fuel. The formed fuel-air mixture or the fuel-oxygen is injected and ignited into the cylinder through the nozzle, by an ignition plug (6), without further compression. Combustible gases are added to oxygen. An independent claim is also included for an internal combustion engine comprising a cylinder.
