A pump (P) is controlled via a control device (C) by relying on a flow temperature measured in a flow pipe (VL) and/or a heat carrier's return temperature measured in a return pipe (RL). The pump is switched on in a test cycle for a pre-adjusted time duration so as to measure flow and return temperatures. After running the test cycle, the control device changes into a pause cycle. An independent claim is also included for a control device for carrying a method according to the present invention.
