The non-contact identification and communication system (1) between a high frequency (HF) generator (2) and especially surgical instruments (3,4) has a transponder (11) with a random access memory (RAM) (12) and antenna (13) at the instrument connecting plugs (9,10). The connection sockets (5-7) at the HF generator have antennae (14) and RAMs (15), with a link to the HF generator control.
