The measuring device comprises a sensor device (4) which has a magnetic field generator (11) and a measuring head (21) for determining the direction of the magnetic field influenced by the position of a component (7). The component has ferromagnetic properties, and is preferably made of metal, or is a permanent magnet or electromagnet. An independent claim is included for contactless position measurement.
