The system has a laser source (3) for illuminating a spot pattern of three spots on retina of eyes (2), where the spots lie on a closed curve. A lens (4) detects a return controlled or reflected radiation from the spot pattern. A detection device (6) generates an independent detection signal using the radiation. A control device (C) evaluates the detection signal for determining the data about the movement of the eyes. An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting an eye movement.
