A ticket has a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag. An RFID reader is allocated to each seat and linked to a central data-recording system. The reader on the seat detects the RFID tag. Detected data and the reader's identity are transmitted to a central data-recording system. The reservation is stored and made available via interfaces for other uses. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) A system for determining occupancy of seats in a vehicle or an area with multiple seats with entitlement to occupying them based on a ticket with a radio frequency identification tag; (2) A seat with a radio frequency identification reader and display for displaying occupancy status and reading in ticket information to be forwarded to a central system.
