The unit has a shift lever latchable in two positions, whereby the forward gears can be selected using the shift lever moved out of the first latched position (I) against a restoring spring force, the reverse gears can be selected using the shift lever moved out of the second latched position (II) against a restoring spring force. and neutral gear is selected when moving the lever from one latched position into the other.
