Operating method is used for mold closing units on injection molding or die casting machines fitted with a locking cylinder (3) with a central piston (5) mounted on tie rods (6, 7). The piston is moved through a chamber (8) which is continuously supplied with a pressure medium and, at the point where the mold closes, is positioned near one end of the cylinder, enclosing a narrow chamber (9) which is then evacuated. An independent claim is included for the locking system, in which a sealing ring (10) is fitted at one end of the cylinder, the piston fitting against this when the mold is closed, forming the pressurized chamber.
