Preparation of aromatic 1-4C hydrocarbon or a mixture of 1-4C alkane comprises contacting an educt stream comprising 1-4C alkane or its mixture with a catalyst to convert a part of 1-4C alkane to an aromatic hydrocarbon; separating the obtained product stream into low boiling stream containing mainly hydrogen, and unreacted 1-4C alkane and high boiling stream containing mainly the formed aromatic hydrocarbon; and absorbing the low boiling stream by contacting with further 1-4C alkane, where the hydrogen contained in the low boiling stream is removed before absorbing.
