The method is for control of the shift sequence of a multispeed automatic transmission of a motor vehicle, wherein with an actual speed engaged, a required target speed, which is several speed steps away from this engaged speed, is engaged in dependence upon the current driving situation selectively as a direct shift in one step or as a combination of several time-separated consecutive single shifts.
