An ultrasound sensor (5) is located in a bore (8) in the bearing ring (1) at a precisely determined spacing (b) from the running surface (2). The sensor is used to measure the spacing (a) between the contact surface (9) of the sensor and the one or more traces of wear (3, 4) in the running surface (2). The difference between the two spacings (a, b) is determined. Should a given value of distance between the spacings be exceeded, a signal is given. An independent claim is included for corresponding equipment.
