The semiconductor laser has a semiconductor chip (1) and at least two resonator reflectors (4). A pump laser (10) optically pumps the laser with a pump power which is modulated with a modulation frequency whilst the laser resonator has a resonator length which is adapted to same. The pump power is preferably modulated so that it does not drop below a laser threshold of the pump laser during the modulated operation. The pump laser is mounted outside of the semiconductor chip.
