The device has a detection device (12) for detecting two-dimensional images (B) of subsequent sections (15) of a conveyor belt during the continuous operation of the belt. The detection device is connected with an evaluating device (13) such that the detected images are transmitted to the evaluating device. The evaluating device is designed in such a manner that it compares the images (B) with two-dimensional reference images (R) assigned to the sections, where the belt condition information is determined and outputted based on the comparison of the images.
