The method involves modulating a gas mixture which is supplied to a broadband lambda probe, in a measuring gas chamber for recognition of diffusion gas composition of the gas mixture. The air ratio in the chamber of a pump cell of the probe is periodically changed to change the sensitivity of the sensor for two gases. The Nernst voltage with a frequency of 5 hertz is modulated in a sinusoidal manner, such that the amplitude of the modulated signals amounts to 100 millivolt. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a method for operating a broadband lambda probe, and (2) a control device for operating a broadband lambda probe.
