A composition contains (A) an aqueous dispersion of a phenol-formaldehyde resin; (B) a specified amine compound of molecular weight not exceeding ca. 20000; (C) an active silane obtained by reaction of a specified silane with a 3-12C enolizable ketone with =1 carbonyl group or with =1 hydroxy group; and (D) a specified hydroxyaromatic compound. A composition contains (A) an aqueous dispersion of a phenol-formaldehyde resin; (B) an amine compound of formula (1) of molecular weight not exceeding ca. 20000; (C) an active silane obtained by reaction of (i) a mono-, di- or tri-1-8C alkoxysilane having a 2-10C aminoalkyl or N-aminoalkyl group, 3-(2-aminoethylamino)propyl-trimethoxysilane, (MeO) 3-Si-(CH 2) 3-NH-(CH 2) 3-Si(OMe) 3, 3-aminopropylsilanetriol, an aminosilane with an ethoxylated nonylphenolate, and/or Phenyl-CH 2-NH-(CH 2) 3-NH-(CH 2) 3-Si(OMe) 3; with (ii) a 3-12C enolizable ketone with =1 carbonyl group or with =1 hydroxy group; and (D) an aromatic hydroxy compound comprising a dihydroxybenzene (especially 1,2-, 1,3- or 1,4-dihydroxybenzene) or its hydroxymethylated derivatives (especially of resorcinol or of pyrocatechol), 2,3- or 2,4-dihydroxyphenylmethanol or multi-hydroxymethylated derivatives of these activated aromatics (e.g. 2,3-dihydroxy-4-hydroxymethylphenylmethanol or 4,5-dihydroxy-2-hydroxymethylphenylmethanol), a trihydroxybenzene (especially 1,3,5-trihydroxybenzene or its mono- or di-hydroxymethylated compounds), 2,3,4- or 2,4,6-trihydroxyphenylmethanol, a C-alkylated compound of phenol or of resorcinol (especially 1-hydroxy-2 (or 3- or 4-)-methylbenzene), 2-methylresorcinol, self-condensation products of hydroxymethylated compounds, bis-2,4-dihydroxyphenylmethane, activated heterocyclics (e.g. pyrrole or thiophene) or their mono- or di-alkylated or annelated derivatives (especially (thio)indole) and/or trihydroxy derivatives of naphthalene.
