Treating melts (A), particularly of iron or steel, using an alloy (B), containing at least magnesium and an additional metal, which is added to the melt. The new feature is that, to create a buffer zone (4.1) between melt (3), in a (pressurized) casting oven, and as yet untreated feed melt (11), in at least one inlet channel (2) of (1), a treating agent (X) is first supplied in a way that the reaction process takes place only within the melting pot (8).
