Preparation of xylylenediamine by continuously hydrogenating phthalodinitrile over a heterogeneous catalyst in a reactor, in which a portion of the reactor effluent is recycled as a liquid circulation stream continuously to the reactor inlet, comprises mixing phthalodinitrile by a mixing device with a stream of liquid ammonia (stream a) and a further stream that is removed at least as a sub-stream from the circulation stream around the hydrogenation reactor (stream b), or mixing of streams a and b, and conducting the resulting liquid mixture into the hydrogenation reactor.
