The instrument is detachably connected with a drive unit. Identification unit is attached to the instrument, where the identification unit is automatically readable for transmission of instrument specific data. The identification includes a radio frequency identification transponder, and also includes a mechanically readable code. The identification unit is formed in a label, which is readable by the user. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a dental medical or surgical device with a drive unit for detachably receiving dental medical or surgical instruments (2) a method for operating the dental medical or surgical device.
