The method involves implementing an access control for data traffic to be transmitted over a link by using a limitation for entire data traffic to be transmitted over the link. Traffic type specific allocation utilization is approximately determined by a measuring value for the entire traffic and nominal value for the entire traffic and individual traffic types. An overbooking of the links is enabled according to the measures of the determined values for the traffic type specific allocation utilization. An independent claim is also included for a device for implementing the method for improving the utilization of links in a communication network.
