The method involves applying alternating voltage signal with a frequency at two contact surfaces (22) that are moistened by a fluid (F). A reactive power that is supplied into the contact surfaces by the voltage signal is detected based on a frequency of the voltage signal. A percentage and type of impurity of the fluid is determined based on detected frequency sensitivity of the reactive power. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining percentage and type of impurity in a fluid.
