The system has a diesel motor, a propeller (6), and a diesel generator unit, where the motor and a machine system (10) are linked with the propeller by a gear (4). The generator unit and the machine system are connected with an on-board supply system (18). The machine system comprises an asynchronous machine (26) and a voltage intermediate circuit-converter. A mains-sided rectifier of the converter is connected with the supply system, and a load-sided rectifier is connected with the asynchronous machine.
