The device is especially for cleaning internal combustion engine exhaust gases containing soot particles, whereby it is in the form of a filter (10) with a porous surface (18) made of a filter base material containing sinter metal exposed to the gas mixture (13) to be cleaned. The pores of the porous surface are at least partly coated with a material containing aluminum.
