The unit has a layer with a phosphor-bond unit (14) that is selected from a group containing calcium and/or magnesium and/or strontium and/or barium and/or rare earth elements or any combination of the elements. The phosphor-bond unit forms a crystalline phosphor connection in a measuring gas containing phosphor in powdered form, and the layer containing the phosphor-bond unit is an external protective layer (13) of the sensor unit. An independent claim is also included for a method for manufacturing a sensor unit.
