The method involves transmitting a transmit signal with a transmitter of a distance sensor at a time point. The transmit signal is converted into a receive signal with a receiver of the sensor, and another time point at which the receive signal exceeds a preset threshold value is determined. The run time of the signal from the transmitter to the receiver is determined from a difference between the time points. A frequency distribution of the run time is determined to produce a sensor distance value, which correlates with the sensor runtime between the transmitter and the receiver.
