Method operates valve with variable stroke by which a control event leads to closing phase of valve and closes the valve at an end time point. This time point is viewed as clsing start and the difference between closing start and closing time point characterizes the closing duration. Following from the closing time point an actual time duration is determined and compared with the time duration calculated from the control function of the dwell angle. The need to reduce the deviations between actual values and corresponding calculated values is then checked. If the need arises, characteristic mapping is matched so that the found deviations can be reduced at least on average.
