An optical fiber for polarized emitting fiber lasers and amplifiers, consisting of a core and a sheath, the core contains anisotropically distributed laser ions. An independent claim is included for the production of the optical fibers, by: (A) forming two types of primary preforms, the first doped with laser ions and the second doped with refractive index-increasing material; (B) processing the individual preforms to give a predetermined ratio of external diameter to core diameter; (C) drawing the individual preforms; (D) sliding the preforms into a sheath tube, with a predetermined distribution of the primary preforms of the first and second types; (E) collapsing the sheath tube onto the preform; and (F) drawing the preform to an optical fiber.
