The device has sensor units (2, 3) for receiving signals, and a control device (6) with a decoder unit (5) that is connected with one of the sensor units by a connection line (4). One of the sensors receives the signals in the form of current or voltage signals. The decoder unit has an adjustable input switching threshold and an adjustable short circuit detection threshold. An adjusting unit is provided for adjusting the limiting current of the short circuit detection threshold based on the actual value of the input-switching threshold.
