The method involves adjusting driving parameters e.g. vehicle speed, acceleration, braking, transmission control and switching, of a commercial vehicle depending on a driving condition and/or a routing process. Topography of a route is evaluated in a computerized manner during the adjustment of the driving parameters, where topography data are called for the topography of the route from a data memory. The topography data with elevation data assigned to the geographical position are stored in the data memory. An independent claim is also included for a device for assisting a driver during a driving operation of a commercial vehicle by a vehicle assistant system.
