Cleaning device (1) is hinge-fastened to floor (2) of escalator frame of the return shaft (3) and can pivot using pivot arms (4,5) on the steps (6) of the escalator (7). A cleaning brush (9), rotating at right angles to the travelling direction of the escalator, guided parallel to the steps and driven by a barrel engine (8), is arranged between the pivot arms. Its turning direction is opposed to the travelling direction of escalator. A driving lever (10) and linear motor (11) are allocated to the pivot arms.
