The ultrasonic impulse method involves producing a traversal or longitudinal oscillation in a solid body, placed in an acoustic contact with a tested fluid. Acoustic fluid characteristics are measured during measuring amplitudes of an acoustic signal in the solid body. Measured parameters include density and viscosity of the tested fluid. A measuring geometry is selected for producing and receiving the ultrasound and a geometrical form of the solid body. A surface area of a solid surface in the acoustic contact is m times greater than the surface area of an ultrasonic bunch cross section. An independent claim is also included for a device for realizing a method for measuring a physical characteristic of a fluid.
