By simulating a production environment on the basis of suitable simulation models, a schedule is created in which process restrictions, system availability, and the status of the product units are automatically taken into account. Furthermore, by estimating the process flow efficiency, which is provided by a simulated temporal course of the process flow in the environment, an optimized schedule can be created, which can be achieved by recognizing inefficient product units and re-arranging one or more product units to obtain an initial improved process flow efficiency. The technology according to the invention can advantageously be used in the processing of modern mass products that require modern process equipment and process sequences, such as the processing of semiconductor components.
