The device has a suction device (22) for sucking smoke, and a smoke screen (3) with a suction opening, which is arranged within a fireplace (2). The screen is pivotable against the fireplace, and the suction device is fastened to the screen. A flexile intake air boot (16) is provided between a lower edge of the fireplace and an upper side of the screen. An illuminating device (7) e.g. LED light source, is arranged in the screen and surrounds a part of the suction opening. An operating profile is fastened to a front edge of the screen.
