The method involves detecting measuring signals of a drive input sensor, which monitors actuations and contacts of a driver on a brake pedal or accelerator or a steering or a gear selector lever of the vehicle. The measuring signals of each drive input sensor are evaluated with the measuring signals that are provided from each ambient sensor in such a way that based on the evaluation on a situation driving to park or a free swing situation is concluded and the functionality of the automatic transmission is adapted without implementing gear shift automatically.
