The method involve detecting the bar code on the basis of flanks of the scanning signal and an ideal signal process is reconstructed corresponding to the bar code. The elementary width is determined from the scanning signal, and the flanks of the scanning signal are determined within an adjustable filtering window (FF1,FF2,FF3) with window width (FB) dependant on the elementary width dependent. The filtering window is shifted for retrieving the flanks concerning a signal process given by the scanning signal. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for determining a bar code formed from a number of lines and gaps (2) a computer program product for determining scanned signal from a number of lines and gaps.
