The method involves determining overall quality value (22) as a measure of correspondence between the object (3.1,3.4) and the pattern (4). The lines in the pattern (19) are determined for the edge points of the pattern by finding edge points with essentially the same orientation. An edge point in the recorded image is assessed as belonging to an object that corresponds to the pattern if a predefined number of edge points adjacent to the relevant edge point have an orientation that essentially corresponds to the orientation of a line in the pattern. An independent claim is also included for an object recognition system with an image recording unit and image processing unit.
