The method involves determining an elapsed time or elapsed crank angle for determination of an ambient pressure. The elapsed time or the elapsed crank angle is compared with two given values, where one value is smaller than the other value. An exhaust gas recirculation is stopped, when the given values exceed the elapsed time or the elapsed crank angle, to enable determination of the ambient pressure at a point of partial load operation of an internal combustion engine. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating an internal-combustion engine.
