The method involves determining the wheel speed of a motor vehicle from the speed (nmot) of a drive motor (12), an actual gear ratio (iG) and a circumference of a drive wheel (14). A default value for the wheel speed is temporarily determined when a frictional connection between the drive motor and a carriageway is deemed to be reversed, while the final wheel speed is temporarily controlled by a low-pass filter.
