The method involves injecting combustion air and fuel (9) into a combustion chamber (2) of an internal combustion engine. The combustion process is started through self ignition of the fuel/combustion air mixture. The fuel is again injected into the combustion chamber for maintaining the combustion process. The fuel injection is stopped, when the engine yields a requested output. The exhaust gas is then output through an exhaust gas outlet section.
