The method involves determining a characteristic parameter for a frictional coefficient of a roadbed. The parameter is transferred into a driving assistance system, and the roadbed is sensed for determining a visually observable parameter in a space of a motor vehicle by a sensor. A contrast change of the roadbed is determined as a parameter, and an influence of texture outside a roadway is compensated by an algorithm of determination. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling a driving assistance system of a motor vehicle.
