The method involves assigning characteristics of filtered model values (EGBP-MDL-FIL) of exhaust gas back pressure to characteristics of actual values of the exhaust gas back pressure during adjusting and/or real time adjustment of a valve stroke. The characteristics of the filtered model values of the exhaust gas back pressure are determined by a low-pass filter. Actual values (EGBP-AV) and/or actual model values (EGBP-MDL-1, EGBP-MDL-2) of the exact gas back pressure are provided as target values for the low-pass filter. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating an internal combustion engine.
