The unit has an organic electrically conducting active intermediate layer (2) enclosed by two electrically conducting electrodes (1, 3), where one or both the electrodes are contacted at an outer edge region. Lateral dimension of the electrodes is larger than thickness of the light emitting diode unit. One of the electrodes is optically transparent. Electrical conductors (4) are led along an outer surface of the electrodes based on an electrical contact (5) formed at an end. The conductors overlap the electrodes in area wise, and form a power supply line.
