Fluorination of plastics comprises introducing plastic articles into a reaction chamber (1) and subjecting to a gas-phase fluorination at atmospheric pressure in the reaction chamber, using elemental fluorine, halogen fluorides, or noble gas fluorides, e.g. xenon difluoride or xenon tetrafluoride. The temperature during the gas-phase fluorination is 15-50[deg]C. Flushing with inert gas or air is carried out after fluorination. An independent claim is included for an apparatus for fluorination of plastics.
