The device has a central biometric identification device (20) inputting biometric data such as finger prints. A controller (18) is connected with a closure device (16) and the identification device. A storage device (28) has a storage space for storing the biometric data. A comparison circuit (32) compares technical biometric data stored in the space with the biometric data input by the identification device. A deletion circuit deletes or overwrites the biometric data after transferring positive output signals from the comparison circuit to the space allocated to a deposit box. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a safe-deposit box.
