The separator has a base material thickness of separator sheets (1) at an exterior edge of a border area (R). The thickness of an electrode plate increases in a contact area (A) of the separator sheet. The base material thickness of an electrode plate in the border area adjacent to the contact area is larger than the base material thickness of the contact area. A projecting rib (2a) is arranged over the base material thickness in the border area. An independent claim is also included for a lead-acid battery with separators having one electrode from alternatively arranged positive and negative flat shaped electrodes, which are arranged between the separators for the separation of the opposite polarity electrodes.
