The structural component (22, 24) includes a pillar unit (14) extending vertically, with a spring strut and shock absorber support (30) for the suspension. The pillar unit and spring strut support are connected by a cantilever (28). The pillar is a vehicle A-column or C-column. The pillar unit is connected to a further component (18) of the bodywork. The spring strut support includes a domed region with an opening. During assembly, the structural component is mounted on a preliminary bodywork section, before or during longitudinal member, engine and/or running gear installation. An independent claim is included for the corresponding method of assembly.
