A guidance and compression channel (18) is formed into the sliding surface (12.1) of the compactor (4.1), for compression of the fibrous strand. Spacers (16.1, 16.2) are fixed axially and radially on the axle (17) of the feed pressure roller (3). The spacers engage grooves formed into the circumference of the feed pressure roller axle. Guides project from the axle of the feed pressure roller (3), the spacer resting to the side. Each spacer is a support face (16.1,16.2) from which the compactor projects down. Each support cheek is formed on the side of the compactor. Each support cheek is guided on the axis or a stub shaft of the feed pressure roller, and they reach over the sides of the feed pressure roller. If appropriate, off-center support of the compactor is compensated by the spacers, via the sliding surface of the compactor on the lower cylinder. A wrapping width (u) of the sliding surface resting against the lower cylinder is at least partially enlarged. An off-center pressure- or holding force is applied to the compactor or its sliding surface. Magnets of unequal strength or size are employed in the compactor. The corresponding compactor is also claimed.
