The method involves continuously detecting up-to-date condition images of pre-determined areas of a material handling equipment (20) with a camera (50) e.g. video camera, where the camera is perpendicularly arranged over the material handling equipment. The condition images are evaluated to determine an actual position of the material to be conveyed in the pre-determined area of a haulway. A comparison of target and actual values is performed for identifying the actual position. A control signal is generated based on the result of comparison of target and actual values. An independent claim is also included for a picking system with a material handling equipment.
