A compact handling system, e.g. for gripping and moving of items, has two linear motors (3, 4) operating in orthogonal directions. The two primaries are linked and fitted as one unit. One secondary is directly connected to the grab arm (13) while the other secondary is directly connected to the support mounting. The orthogonal directions can be vertical and horizontal. The primary module can include a fan.
