The method involves bringing a crankshaft (30) into a desired starting position using a positioning unit. An indirect torque that acts on the crankshaft is influenced by an influencing unit (34) during running phase of an internal combustion engine (10) while no more fuel is injected or ignited. The torque is influenced in such a manner that a pressure is influenced in a combustion chamber (14) of the engine during the running phase. The pressure is influenced in the combustion chamber by discharging a gas that is available in the combustion chamber. An independent claim is also included for an internal combustion engine for driving a motor vehicle.
