The retractor has a vehicle sensitive and/or seat belt strap sensitive controllable locking device for a belt shaft (13). A force limiting device is provided for the shaft with a torsion bar (16), which has two profile-ends and an energy absorption section (18) that is formed at the ends. The torsion bar has a reinforcement section (19) that has a greater flexural rigidity than the energy absorption section. The reinforcement section has a larger cross section than the energy absorption section.
